Growing up in the online world: our submission to the national consultation on social media

The APPG for Wellbeing Economics recently submitted a response to the government’s consultation on social media via its secretariat, the World Wellbeing Movement.

Our submission was drafted following the most recent APPG meeting, on Social media and wellbeing in March 2026, which used the findings from World Happiness Report 2026 as the basis for conversation. Report editors Jan-Emmanuel De Neve and Richard Layard provided an overview of the findings, and social psychologist Jonathan Haidt was a guest speaker.

Our response to the UK government outlines the harms of social media use among young people, and calls for restrictions on social media accounts for those aged 16 and under, as well as banning the use of phones in schools.
