Social media and wellbeing

The APPG on Wellbeing Economics met on Monday 23rd March to discuss the links between social media and wellbeing, in light of recent findings from the World Happiness Report 2026 and in the context of the UK Government’s consultation.

We heard from three expert speakers:

  • World Happiness Report 2026 editors Prof Lord Richard Layard and Prof Jan-Emmanuel De Neve provided an overview of the key findings.
  • Professor Jonathan Haidt described how social media is harming adolescents at a scale large enough to cause population level changes.
